Who are the “heavyweight” international journalists to assess Argentine wines?

Get to know here the 12 experts of the international press who will make up the judging panel in the 8th edition of the Argentina Wine Awards 2014 contest, to be held from February 16 to 21, in Mendoza.

For eighth year in a row, Wines of Argentina, entity in charge of promoting the image of the Argentine wine all over the world, will conduct a new edition of the “Argentina Wine Awards 2014 (AWA). This contest will be held from February 16 to 21, 2014, in Mendoza-Argentina. There, Argentine wines will be assessed by 12 renowned experts of the international press and 7 from Argentina, who will be responsible for tasting all the samples.

This edition, designed to evaluate and reward the quality and progress in the Argentine winemaking, is aimed at further promoting the Argentine wine in the main international markets. The world’s leading figures and opinion shapers will make up the panel of the contest, along with very talented Argentinian winemakers, as national judges.

Who are the celebrities?

Steven Spurrier: Consultant Editor for Decanter Magazine. Since 2004, he is Chairman of the Decanter World Wine Awards, one of the world’s largest wine competition, and since 2012 the Co-Chairman of Decanter Asia Wine Awards.

Patricio Tapia: Specialized journalist, holding a diploma in wine tasting. Currently, he works for Wine & Spirits Magazine in New York, where he covers the wines from South America and Spain. He also writes for Decanter Magazine in London about the Argentine and Chilean wine scene.

Bruce Shoenfeld: award-winning author and journalist. He is editor of Travel + Leisure Magazine and former contributing editor for Wine Spectator. His writings are published in Gourmet, Food & Wine, Saveur, The World of Fine Wine, Wine & Spirits, The New York Times Magazine, among others.

Jorge Lucki: columnist for Valor Econômico, the Brazil’s leading economics newspaper, where he has written for 13 years a weekly column on wines. Besides, he also writes regularly on wine in the prestigious monthlies Valor Investe and Prazeres da Mesa. His experience in the Brazilian wine sector also includes a daily comment about wines for the CBN radio program in Brazil and abroad.

Edwin Soon: journalist nominated by the Vinitaly’s International Wine and Spirits as Communicator of the Year 2011, and he also received the Wine Pioneer Award from Wine for Asia. He writes a column for the Appetite magazine and The Malaysian Star newspaper.

Suzana Barelli: journalist and editor of Menu Magazine, in Brazil.

Andreas Larsson: Sommelier-Wine Director Restaurant PM & Vanner and wine writer.

DJ Kearney: wine critic for WineAlign, Sommelierie instructor and journalist of Vancouver Magazine.

Colu Henry: Special Project Director of Bon Appétit.

Tommy Lam: has obtain a Wine MBA from the Bordeaux École de Management, France, as well as a MBA from the Dubuque University, United States. He is Certified Sommelier (CS), and holds the degree of Court of Master Sommelier Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) from the Society of Wine Educator, Unites States. In addition, Tommy is Certified Specialists of Spirits (CSS), diploma granted by the Society of Wine Educator (Unites States). He has also obtained a Certificate on Piemontese Wines (CPW), issued by the University of Gastronomic Sciences.

Nicholas Siu (Hong Kong): editor of Cru Magazine, one of the most important publications in China.

Demei Li (China): considered the best winemaker in China, he is graduated from the prestigious ENITA of Bordeaux. He did his training at Chateau Palmer during the 2001 harvest. He is associate professor at the Beijing Agriculture College and at ESA in Angers, France. He works as consultant for several wineries in China, one of which won the International Trophy of the 2011 Decanter World Wine Award in London. In 2012, for his achievements and performance in winemaking, he received the Wine Intelligence 10-for-10 Business Award, was included in the Decanter Power list 2013, and rated by RVF as “Man of the year” in Chinese wine industry. Moreover, Li Demei is contributor and editorial consultant for several publications in China, and has published two books on wine. He was the first Chief Winemaker at CFM vineyard and winery.

Who are the national judges?

Jorge Riccitelli: Norton winery’s winemaker, nominated as “Winemaker of the Year 2012” by the prestigious Wine Enthusiast magazine.

Roberto De La Mota: winemaker and the first Argentinian to be part of the Switzerland-based International Wine Academy.

Sebastián Zuccardi: agronomist and winemaker of his family’s third generation. Last year, he was internationally distinguished as the new winemaker 2013 during the Gaucho Argentine Winemaker Awards, in UK.

Daniel Pi: thanks to his know-how on diverse Argentine terroirs and his vast experience in the wine industry, he is winemaking and vineyard director of Grupo Peñaflor.

Alejandro Sejanovich: winemaker and agronomist. He has worked at Catena Zapata winery and currently, he is consultant at Casarena.

Mauricio Lorca: winemaker and manager of Bodegas y Viñedos Mauricio Lorca.

Fernando Buscema: winemaker and general manager of CARO winery and Catena Zapata’s research and Development director.
