The first “Oscar” for an Argentine wine

The first “Oscar” for an Argentine wine

It was March 1987 when the technical staff of the Nacari cooperative, now part of La Riojana Coop., decided to send a sample of its 1986 Torrontés Riojano to VINEXPO, the largest wine fair in the world. They wanted to hear what experts thought of this variety that these young winemakers had great faith on. It was not easy for them to convince those responsible for authorizing the participation in the contest. Still, the ‘Nacarí Esmerilado’ left for France. The result of this audacity was that this sample of Riojano Torrontes won the Wine “OSCAR” to the best dry white wine of the world, the first won by an Argentine wine. Next year will mark 25 years of that feat that marked the history of Argentina’s wines. The young enthusiastic winemakers were Guillermo Neyra and Jorge Ruitti (author of these lines and member of the winemaking team of La Riojana).
